That was many years ago and since becoming a beader, I never gave a thimble a thought. But with my carpal tunnel, I will certainly get my old trusty gems out and get the feel of it again! And I use bead stoppers all the time but had not considered E Z Bobs (which I use for Kumihimo) for thread!
I guess I need to slow down the beading long enough to think more on the tools. I have had magnifier lamps, but never really mastered how to use the magnification part, but the light was excellent. Cheaters and good light are probably my most important tools, along with my friend James's addition of Patience!Marsha Wiest-Hineshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15481754729084714643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6284884316719285197.post-61668035285401963652013-12-05T17:21:45.387-06:002013-12-05T17:21:45.387-06:00You spoke truthfully when you said we all work out...You spoke truthfully when you said we all work out our own processes and tools. I do not use a single one of those tools and do not own any of them. I used to own a thimble and I understand how useful they are. I will have to give thimbles some thought.

I am always tempted by the bead stoppers but I never buy them. I have used all sorts of things as substitutes over the years, thus the temptation.

I don't use bobbins either. However, when traveling, or when the need arises to control threads, I grab an empty bead vial, wrap the thread around my fingers and plop the coiled thread into the empty tube and put the stopper in. Not quite as smooth as your bobbin but it is a tool I have in abundance and it stops tangles and keeps threads out of the way.

What I have become dependent on is my daylight spectrum magnifying lamp. Two weeks ago it burned out. I can bead without it but it is so much easier when it is right there.

As always Marsha this was fascinating. It is a different way of using a needle, and does take time to learn, but for me, it is a tremendously useful technique, both improving the speed and quality of my work and easing the tension in my body. I don't know how often you have a multitude of threads to manage in embroidery, so maybe the stoppers and bobbins will be less useful. :)Marsha Wiest-Hineshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15481754729084714643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6284884316719285197.post-18601929013788181062013-12-04T22:44:08.899-06:002013-12-04T22:44:08.899-06:00Wow! I never used a thimble, I tried once and it felt alien on my finger, but reading your description makes me want to try again and stick with it! I read about the EZ Bobs before, they are used in kumihimo braiding a lot, but I never had any, and then the wire clip thing is an ingenious idea! Thimbles and thread control are my hot buttons, but everyone is probably different. I really learned to use my thimble when padstitching collars and lapels. It is very hard work and fingers cannot survive without armor. I think that is where I got my habit. But we are all free to choose our own way, eh? But since I tend to push the needle the way you do anyway, I sometimes need the thimble to not hurt the skin on the long run! As for the stoppers, great tool, yes! I have never seen the bobbins for sale - I often keep the original bobbin attached to the bead work, and it always gets in the way :D Cath Thomashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00950242018516735751noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6284884316719285197.post-12220676214902526592013-12-04T08:21:26.842-06:002013-12-04T08:21:26.842-06:00PiPa thank you! I do use a thimble because my finger was completely open up by the needle :( but I found a silicone thimble which, I think, works better because it's softer. I should definitely try the stoppers.PiPahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00160937178391495509noreply@blogger.com
